Voyager 2 Timeline

  • August 20, 1977: Voyager 2 is launched from Cape Canaveral atop a Titan 3E Centaur rocket.
July 9, 1979: Voyager 2 flies by Jupiter, coming within 350,000 miles of the planet's cloud tops, and discovers 3 new moons and a few faint rings of material around the planet, as well as volcanic activity on Io, one of the four bigger Jovian satellites.
August 26, 1981: Voyager 2 flies by Saturn, probing its upper atmosphere using a radar and detecting winds of more than 1,000 miles per hour.
January 24, 1986: Voyager 2 flies by Uranus, coming within 50,600 miles of the planet's cloud tops and discovers a ring system and 10 new moons around the planet.
August 25, 1989: Voyager 2 flies by Neptune and discovers 6 new moons around the planet, a ring system and geysers on Triton.
January 1, 1990: With both Voyager 1 & 2 on a solar system escape trajectory, and no further flyby opportunities beyond Neptune, the project enters the Voyager Interstellar Mission phase.

Guide Note:Launched in 1977 by NASA and still operating after almost thirty years, the Voyager 2 spacecraft performed a "Grand Tour" of our outer solar system, taking advantage of a rare planetary alignment to visit the four gas giants Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, a feat not likely to be repeated in our lifetimes. It's currently heading into interstellar space.

Fast Facts:

  1. August 20, 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of its launch.
  2. Voyager 2 explored all the giant outer planets of our solar system, 48 of their moons, and the unique systems of rings and magnetic fields those planets possess. It's the first and only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune to date.
  3. As of March 9, 2007, it was 7.6 billion miles away from Earth.
  4. The spacecraft was built to last five years, but it's expected to keep transmitting into the 2020s. By then, it will be 10.5 billion miles away from the Sun.
  5. In approximately 296,000 years, Voyager 2 will sail within 4.3 light years (25 trillion miles) of Sirius, the brightest star visible in Earth's sky today.
  6. The spacecraft carries a gold phonograph record bearing messages, sounds, and pictures from Earth intended as greetings to any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find Voyager 2. The contents were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by the astronomer Carl Sagan.
